Dracula [Spanish version]
Dec
4
7:30 PM19:30

Dracula [Spanish version]

Join us as The Flushing Remonstrance perform their original live score to the Spanish version of Dracula (the film will be screened as a silent with English subtitles).

Shot on the same sets as Tod Browning's Dracula and released in the same year, Universal's Spanish-language take on Bram Stoker's novel is, in some circles, considered to be the superior film, particularly in its cinematography and darker atmosphere. Carlos Villarias gives Bela Lugosi a run for his money as the iconic bloodsucker in a Stoker adaptation that's more sexually charged than its English-language counterpart.

ONE NIGHT ONLY! Wednesday, December 4, 2024, 7:30 pm at Cobble Hill Cinemas, 265 Court Street, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Advance tickets are on sale now.

The Body Obsessive: The Unknown + Un Chien Andalou

Join us as The Flushing Remonstrance perform their chilling and kaleidoscopic live score to the 1927 silent horror classic The Unknown and legendary surrealist film Un Chien Andalou.

Starring Lon Chaney and Joan Crawford, and directed by Tod Browning (Dracula, Freaks), The Unknown is one of the great silent films, with a startling and intense performance by Chaney as Alonzo, on the run from the law and hiding out in the circus as The Armless Wonder - a performer who uses his feet to hurl knives. Against a background of circus life and the sinister shadow of the underworld, The Unknown is a psychosexual fever dream of love and revenge.

Un Chien Andalou is Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali's groundbreaking depiction of fetish, religion, and obsessive sexuality that forever changed the aesthetics of film.

One night only! Monday, November 11, 2024 at 8:00 pm. Shows at the LetLove Inn are FREE ADMISSION, with donations appreciated.

Aelita: Queen of Mars

Join us for the legendary science-fiction film Aelita: Queen of Mars with a live score from The Flushing Remonstrance.

Said to be the first full-length science fiction movie ever made, Aelita is a fantastic adventure about Los, an engineer living in Moscow, who dreams of Aelita, the Queen of Mars, and builds a spaceship to take him to her. They fall in love, but Los soon finds himself embroiled in a proletarian uprising to establish socialism on the red planet.

Influenced by the Russian avant-garde constructivist movement, the bold artistry of Aelita’s Martian costumes and sets contributed enormously to the science fiction look as we know it. The Flushing Remonstrance celebrate the centennial of this major work of early futuristic cinema by bringing it to life with their all-new live score.

James Sibley Watson and Melville Webber's "Lot In Sodom" (1933) is a sensual depiction of the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, filled with sinewy and semi-clad bodies, delirious bacchanals devoted to physical pleasure, and a searing, cataclysmic finale depicting the fall of a city devoted to adoration of the flesh.

Alla Nazimova and Charles Bryant's adaptation of Oscar Wilde's "Salomé" (1923) also visits the Bible to depict the story of Salomé (Nazimova), who performs the Dance of the Seven Veils for her lustful stepfather King Herod, demanding John the Baptist’s head on a platter as a reward. Featuring stunning costumes and Aubrey Beardsley–inspired art design, and with a (rumored) exclusively gay and bisexual cast, it's considered to be one of America’s first art films.
